I Am His Death

Description

Inspired by a comment made in the making-of featurette for "Hellboy: the Golden Army" by Doug Jones, the actor who plays the Angel of Death (and also Abe Sapien):

"There's a certain beauty to the Angel of Death, even though she looks kind of hideous and corpse-like, in a way. But you can tell that, in her day, when she was created, she was a glorious angel that was beautiful, but has been waiting a long time to fulfill her purpose. So she's a bit cracked and faded now, and withered. She doesn't know it, though; she still thinks she's just gorgeous."

The words around the border are words that she says in the movie: "I am his death, and I will meet him at each crossroad."

This, then, is her meeting him at their first crossroad, when they are both young and unmarred. The infant she is holding is grasping at her with a small, fleshy right hand: according to the comic, the right hand Hellboy was born with was cut off, and the stone Right Hand of Doom was grafted in its place.

The objects at the top of the picture are the staff that the Angel holds in the movie as she's biding her time, and a giant stone sword made to match the Right Hand of Doom (lifted straight from an image in the comic volume "Darkness Calls"): it's their respective fates literally hanging over their heads.

I originally intended her to look more imposing -- maybe even be holding a knife to cut off Anung un Rama's hand -- but when I started drawing, I realized that she looked very maternal. That inspired me to write a fic, which is here:

I would like to re-do this in color, hopefully acrylic paint (no promises on when it would be done, though). For example, I imagine her outer cloak (which is rotted and charcoal gray in the movie) to be robins-egg blue, which will give this pic a sort of Madonna-and-child aspect.

Since this is pencil, I can still make changes, so I would really appreciate criticism. I've already spotted two errors: I forgot to shade in the pupils of the eyes, and the lower half of the veil that hangs behind her back should be visible.

The whole Tarot Card look may be one of the reasons why this is so magical. Even with the high detail and beautiful feather work, there's a certain simplicity in the composition that I find charming. The feel and symbolism reminds me of the old mural paintings from the paleochristian era, but looking closer at the more realistic components, you almost see the early renaissance. Good proportions, clean lines, symetry, and I guess the whole angel theme, with the veil and the dress, all play their part as well.

Not to mention the story behind this. It won't make much sense if you haven't watched the movie at least, but if you're a fan like I am and have read most of the comics and watched everything relating, you find so much more meaning and possible connection to the main character's own personal story. All in all, a treat for us geeks and a great addition to the fandom's universe.

So how long untill we get a colored version?
